The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby was created in France by French women’s organizations to ensure their proper representation both nationally and internationally, and to ensure implementation of the objectives of the European Women’s Lobby.
Beyond their varying concerns regarding society, politics, economics,… all member associations of the C.L.E.F. share common objectives and a common commitment to promote active citizenship and to build a society where women and men are fully equal.
The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby is a lobby and as such lobbies national and European governments, parliamentarians and institutions to effectively promote equal rights and opportunities for women.
The C.L.E.F. combats gender-based discrimination, whether economic, political or social. All forms of violence against women are of particular concern.
For its member organizations, the C.L.E.F. provides a space for reflection, planning and implementation of actions to improve the status of women and to facilitate joint communication at all levels: local, national and European.
The C.L.E.F. provides key information on policies that might impact on member associations. It assists them to launch campaigns promoting awareness, providing information and inciting to action in all areas involving women’s rights.
The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby contributes to enhancing the visibility of women in action.
The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby was founded in 1991 by leaders of French women’s associations who wanted closer cooperation with other European women and a real impact on European policies.
It provides a place where the voices of women from the civil society are strengthened; a place where meetings are organized regularly on issues essential for more active participation of women in the democratic process. Women’s Time is Cities Time; Women’s role in building the European Union, Women and Employment, Women Against Religious Extremisms, Combating Male Violence Against Women are only some of these themes.
Since 1991, the French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby has campaigned for Parity between women and men. Around this concept, a broad coalition was created by women’s associations called “50/50”, with good media support. This campaign led to a reform of the French Constitution and to the law of June 6th 2000.
Member organizations of the French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby pursue the struggle initiated by the women’s movement in the XIXth Century, keeping alive its values and heritage.
ALL ACTIONS OF the FRENCH COORDINATION FOR THE EUROPEAN WOMEN’S LOBBY HAVE AS THEIR REFERENCE SOCIETIES WHERE EQUALITY AND DEMOCRACY ARE FUNDAMENTAL VALUES: IN FRANCE, IN EUROPE AND WORLD-WIDE.
The European Women’s Lobby is a pressure group that coordinates over 3000 European associations representing millions of women in the 15 member States of the European Union up to 2003. With the enlargement of the Union, this number is, of course, greatly expanded.
Together with the other affiliates of the European Women’s Lobby, the French Coordination has been active on all the essential issues concerning women’s rights: combating gender-based violence against women, prostitution and trafficking, violations of legislation on the Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy, the rise of religious fundamentalisms and, in general, for women’s fair and equal place in all areas of society.
The French Coordination for the European Women’s Lobby is also a committed participant in international structures, in particular in the United Nations and its different bodies, thereby actively demonstrating its solidarity with women of all continents.
